Watchmen SPOILERS below

It's true. Dan locked the ship and Rorschach wasn't seen taking the keys. He couldn't have told anyone anyway. The poor guy was splorched for no reason.

And Dr. "loser" Manhattan walks around daydreaming about preordained events and sixteen-year-old girls instead of thinking critically about situations.

I read the Watchmen graphic novel. It was amazing! Rorschach is awesome. It's such a pitty what happens to him, but if my favorite character has to die, that's the way to go-- "Never compromise!" *splorch*

But his death bothers me in more respects than the obvious "wish he hadn't died."

When he and Daniel are leaving the owl ship, Dan says "HEY, IMMA LOCK THIS NOW." The author/illustrator duo cram every bit of meaning as possible into everything--why would they bother taking the time to show us that Dan is a responsible owl ship driver and locks his vehicle before leaving it?

So what was Rorschach's plan? Press his little face against the glass and wait for the others for hours and hours in the freezing cold in his thin little jacket?

And if Rorschach wants to tell the world so badly, why didn't he just keep quiet about his intentions and reveal everything once he was back in civilization?

And the Black Freighter story--at the end, when the main character realizes that he has become too violent to belong in the peaceful world anymore, he goes out towards a ship so he can leave that peaceful world forever. He doesn't want to destroy anything or expose anything, he wants to obliterate himself from the face of the earth.

Could it be that Rorschach gave up? Went through the motions of resisting when all he really wanted was for everything to end? His home and way of life were half-wrecked by Veidt's alien thingie, his recent escape from prison would have everyone in the country freaked out and looking for him, and his only friend showed his true colors and refused to stand up for what was right.

SAD. And if that's not what happened, then the whole "Dan had the keys" issue is the most evil plothole ever. Which would be sadder? IDK. :(

OH... and Dr. Manhattan... for the love of all that is good, PUT SOME PANTS ON.

If it helps your answer, Alan Moore has stated that Rorshach was a death-seeker.

I always read his actions as equal parts living up to his ideals but also committing suicide by Manhattan
